- A Facebook Business Manager account.
- A Squarespace e-commerce business that sells physical items. Currently, you aren’t able to tag digital services or items in Instagram posts.
- Instagram approval of your store.
Have all of the above? Great. Follow the subsequent steps to enable tagging.
Step 1: Connect to a Personal Instagram Page
You’ll need to start with a personal Instagram account. If you’ve maintained a personal account, you’re ready for step 2. If not, follow the below steps to switch from professional to personal Instagram:
- Open your Instagram app and visit your profile
- Tap the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner (Menu)
- Tap the Account option
- At the bottom of the account page, you’ll see the option that says Switch Back to Personal Account.
*Note: Switching from a business account to a personal account will remove all analytical data that you’ve acquired for your Instagram business profile. You should make sure that you have a copy of this information before proceeding.
Step 2: Connect Your Facebook Page
After you’ve confirmed that you have a personal Instagram account, you need to add your Facebook page to Facebook business manager.
- Visit your Facebook Business Manager account and select Business Settings.
- Then, choose the Accounts dropdown and click Pages.
- Choose Add.
- Select Add a Page to select a previously-existing Facebook page.
- Follow the instructions from Facebook Business Manager and complete the process.
Step 3: Convert Your Instagram Back to a Professional Account
After your Facebook page is connected to Facebook Business Manager, you are ready to switch your personal Instagram account back to a professional profile.
Once you do this, you can connect your Instagram account to the Facebook page now connected to Facebook Business Manager.
A bit jumbled? Don’t worry— it’s not too complicated:
- Open your Instagram app and go back to the Account menu
- Scroll to the bottom and click Switch to Professional Account.
- Answer the prompts until you see the Connect to Facebook Page option.
- Tap Choose Page.
- Choose the page you linked to Facebook Business Manager and hit Next.
- Enter your phone number and tap Done.
Step 4: Connect Instagram to Your Facebook Page
In step 4 we’ll be adding your Instagram business profile to Facebook Business Manager. This is what you do:
- Visit your Facebook Business Manager and tap Business Settings.
- Use the Accounts drop-down menu and choose Instagram Accounts.
- Click + Add.
- Enter your Instagram login information.
- Skip the prompt to add the account.
- Click Done.
Step 5: Create a Product Catalog on Facebook
Once you’ve got steps 1-4 done, you’ve arrived at the most important step: create a product catalog on Facebook. It may seem a bit odd that most of this stuff is done through Facebook, but remember— Instagram is owned by Facebook (now Meta), so many of the commerce and ad functions happen from Facebook.
Here is how to create your catalog:
- Log into Facebook Business Manager
- Click the three lines at the top-left of the page (Menu)
- Choose Assets and then click Catalogs.
- Choose Create Catalog.
- Select Upload Product Info. DO NOT select the Connect e-commerce platform option.
- Under Catalog Name, input the name of your choice.
- Click Create.
- Afterwards, click View Catalog.
- Click Products at the top of the page.
Step 6: Connect Your Squarespace E-Commerce Products to Your Facebook Catalog
Important note: You should disable your sitewide password or page-specific password before importing your products; after completed, you can enable your passwords once again.
In order to import your products:
- Once you select Products in Facebook Business Manager, click Add Products.
- Click Use Data Feed and select Next.
- Choose Set a Schedule.
- Open a new window (or tab) and log into your Squarespace site.
- Visit your Squarespace site’s Home Menu and choose Marketing.
- Click Products on Instagram.
- Choose Copy.
- Go back to Facebook Business Manager and scroll until you see Add Data Feed URL.
- Paste the URL that you copied from your Squarespace site.
- You don’t need to continually add new products if you set a schedule for Facebook Business Manager to do automatic uploads from Squarespace.
- Enter a name for your data feed and choose the currency type.
- Click Start Upload.
- Once the upload of your feed is complete, click Done.
After completing the above steps, you’ll be able to verify that everything is uploaded correctly. To do so, navigate to the Data Sources tab. You’ll see the Status column with a message All Good if your upload was successful.
Step 7: Get Approval from Instagram
You have to get approval from Instagram if you want to connect your Squarespace Products with your Instagram. This isn’t related to Squarespace and requires no application; Instagram will automatically review your site after you follow the above steps.
For approval, Instagram will ask you to follow four specific guidelines:
- Have a professional Instagram account.
- Have a professional account that is connected to a Facebook catalog.
- Sell physical goods
- Comply with their commerce policies and merchant agreement.
When your store is approved, Instagram will notify you and you’ll be able to turn on product tagging via Instagram settings. Woohoo!
Step 8: Tag Products on Instagram
After approval has been given by Instagram, you’re ready to enable your Instagram business settings for tagging and shopping. You’ll then have the option to tag new posts and stories with products.
The great thing about this is that you can add these product tags to past posts as well.
Follow these steps to enable product tagging on Instagram:
- On the Instagram app, visit your profile, tap the Menu icon and visit Settings.
- Tap Shopping.
- Hit Continue.
- Connect your business profile by choosing a product catalog.
- Tap Done.
If you don’t see these options available to you, it’s likely that your account is still under review by Instagram.
After you start tagging items in your Instagram content, Squarespace will offer you analytics to see how much traffic and sales you’ve generated from your tagged Instagram posts and stories.
